• How have you gained knowledge of the post-graduate options (professions,
graduate studies, internships) available to you?
Professor Mangini has opened my eyes to many of the options I have once I have completed the English degree program at Rowan University. I have learned about a variety of careers that are often times are overlooked by my peers. Many of the careers Professor Mangini talks about are in demand and available to me even with a bachelors degree. I was assigned a project that challenged me to research a career I had never heard about. This career is one that may appeal to many of my fellow English Majors. This class has broadened my horizons and made me aware that I can use my degree in more ways than I had ever thought. Most English majors are lead to believe if they don't become teachers that their are few careers for them in the working word. Professor Mangini encourages her students to think outside of the box when considering a career and provides the resources to do just that.
• How has the WA Program (or this class in particular) prepared you to work in a variety of fields?
As I am new to the Writing Arts program, this class has taught me not to be afraid to interact with my peers. In this class I was able to discuss my work with my peers and ask for ideas and suggests. Often as writers we are afraid to accept criticism. Professor Mangini presents her class in a way that makes students comfortable talking about their work and reaching out to their peers for suggestions. Through small and large group discussion I voiced my opinions and utilized my peers knowledge to ultimately improve the way I thought about my writing.
• If you are also in education or another major, how can you apply what you have learned in this classes to your teaching profession?
This class has taught me to not be afraid of technology. Although I consider myself quite old fashioned, the world is constantly evolving and unless I keep up with the times I will be left in the dust. Professor Mangini provides resources and suggestions to her students that help them to make themselves more appealing to future employers. At first I hesitated to present my work to anyone other than myself but quickly learned that if I don't put my work out I will never improve or find success. Why work so hard if no one else can enjoy my work?
• If you are also in education or another major, how has this class prepared you for professional options outside teaching?
With a few exceptions, I was introduced to a variety of careers I had never heard about. These careers are in demand right in front of my eyes. Without Professor Mangini I would have likely never realized that there are so many careers that are often overlooked but so incredibly import in the world of literature and writing. I now know that I can find part time work or even full time work in places outside a classroom. As an undergrad I often think about graduate school but never thought of how I would pay for it. Professor Mangini encourages her classes to seek opportunities in positions that will help to or cover the expense of Grad school in full. Many of these positions may even be provided by the grad school you chose to attend!
